When it comes to marketing, the conversation can start anywhere along a very long line, drawn between the big picture plan, and the reach of a social media post. It can make it hard to know where to start and how it all fits together.
Through research and experience, it all works best when the marketing activity falls under a high level plan and each stage builds on the one before. Many of the models and ideas around marketing come from big, bolshy markets and thought leaders in the US and other well-developed commercial industries.
These models or approaches don’t always fit well with Kiwis and Aussies, and how we like to do business. We like a humanistic, trusted approach. Its pretty hard to be successful and be a ‘dickhead’ here in NZ as in a reputation economy, your name is your currency, and even more so in NZ where we really do operate in a connected personal way. If you’re over-bearing or use an aggressive business approach that’s designed with another culture in mind, people will likely see through this, trust won’t develop and the results won’t happen, and they’ll tell others about it and you.
So, what’s this got to do with marketing? Basically, the OTT models that are shouted out as the best elsewhere, don’t seem to cut it here. So here’s a simple, structure, easy to follow, Kiwi friendly model of marketing.
Take a look at the Mostimo model. It’s designed to help answer the burning questions such as “We need to do some marketing, how do we?” or “where the hell do we start?”.
If you’re starting a new venture, the Mostimo model kicks in after you’ve mapped the business strategy and have the identity sorted so do these before getting into the detail of this model.
If you’re an existing business, you’ll have these so you can get stuck in. This is about setting objectives for your marketing, and how you get the word out there.
Business Strategy, then Business Identity (Vision, Mission, Values, Brand), then onto Marketing – and that’s where Mostimo kicks in. It helps you develop the strategy, and continue right down into the details and plans to achieve the goals you’re setting. Step by step.
