One of my favourite events of the year was on yesterday in Ōtautahi Christchurch – The Long Run. This is a community and all-inclusive event run by the Crusade with Heart Foundation, where everyone sets their own goal and walks, jogs, runs, wheels, or saunters the approx 1 km loop around the Crusaders’ home base at Rugby Park, and raises funds for The Child Cancer Foundation. There’s an amazing vibe on the day with lots of cheering, laughing, chatting and inspiring stories.
This year, I was joined by some of my fabulous colleagues at Dynamic Controls where we had a corporate tent for the day. After my laps were done, someone made the mistake of handing me a megaphone, so we did share words of encouragement and use it to blast some Venga Boys and other cheesy pop tunes for added motivation (we may have gotten booed for one of our song choices!).
People join for a lap or two, and some clock up over 100 laps! There's no need to run and no minimum number of laps, and every lap counts. Everyone I’ve spoken to shares how much they enjoy the sense of connection and pride in being part of something that really makes a difference.
Yesterday, the lofty target of 25,000 laps was set, and so many people helped to achieve a whopping 40,042, and raising over $190,000 for The Child Cancer Foundation and counting!
Huge thank you to the staff and wider Crusaders whānau for making it such a great event, and helping us all contribute to such a great cause.
If you want to add a few dollars to the cause, you can still donate too: click here
Keep an eye out for this event next year and join in, it really is such a fantastic day!
